There's a silent epidemic affecting the health and quality of life of thousands of children in our community. Some common symptoms may include infection, pain, swelling, poor nutrition, lack of ability to learn and behavioral problems. Curious as to what it could be? Actually, the problem is right under our noses: More than half of all California school-age children have untreated tooth decay. Lack of access to preventive dental care and dental health education are recognized as the top contributors to this serious problem. Seals on Wheels began with one woman's dream and a passionate desire to make a difference. It became a nonprofit and began providing mobile preventive dental care in 1999 at two school sites, and offering referral for treatment free of charge to approximately 6,000 socio-economically disadvantaged Preschool through 6th grade students at qualified Orange County elementary school sites. Through the collaborative efforts of several foundations, we expanded the screening and sealant component to 35 of the 65 schools enrolled in the CCDDPP. |
